Phoenix Karate Kids Learn More Than Just Kung Fu Moves and Taekwondo Kicks

Phoenix Karate Kids Learn More Than Just Kung Fu Moves and Taekwondo Kicks From Arizona USA Martial Arts School

This Team of Karate Senseis Do More Than Teach... They Lead By Example

If you are like many Phoenix parents concerned with what appears to be a decline of family values, American patriotism, personal responsibility, courteous manners, kindness and good old fashioned common sense, USA Martial Arts Phoenix might be the answer for your children.

Founded by John Nottingham an Army  veteran who served in a Special Forces Airborne reserve unit, an Eagle Scout, and 7th Degree Black Belt Hall of Fame Master, his Phoenix martial arts school emphasizes character.

"Our school stands for something far beyond just the kick, punch and throw.  Although we have developed numerous champions in the martial arts, our greatest mission is to develop outstanding leaders for the future.", says Nottingham, owner of USA Martial Arts Phoenix.

He continues, "Children today are exposed to millions of messages that are counter to being a person of virtue.  We create an environment in our Phoenix Martial Arts school that rewards honor, integrity and reinforces having character, rather than being a character."

Award-Winning Staff of Black Belt Role Models
Nottingham's award-winning team of instructors and Black Belts receive seven times the amount of training as is the martial arts industry average.  Instructors at his Phoenix Martial Arts school first must excel in the martial arts, then they must learn how to teach the discipline to men, women and children of all ages and abilities in a safe and effective manner.

"Our instructors lead by example in health, fitness and character.", states Nottingham who is currently training for a marathon as part of his 7th Degree Black Belt test.

Instructor Steve Caprara is a national champion in Karate and holds multiple Black Belts including Taekwondo.  A gifted teacher with both children and adults, he encourages excellence in home, school, work as well as in his classes.

Instructor Robert Summers, a former bull rider and Kenpo stylist, now Taekwondo Black Belt and USA Martial Arts Instructor.  A family man who wins the hearts of his students with his talent and enthusiasm.  He is also a Tactical Instructor in Nottingham Sword & Shield Security, a bodyguard training and services company.

Instructor Don Gray is veteran who served in Iraq, a former Jr. Olympic Taekwondo Champion as well as a Modern Army Combatives Level II Instructor.  He has been with Master Nottingham for 18 years and carried on their martial arts family tradition of serving in the military and teaching hand-to-hand combat.

The USA Martial Arts Instructors have experience in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, MMA, Krav Maga, Muay Thai Kickboxing and continue to learn. The USA Martial Arts staff mantra is, "Always a student, sometimes an instructor."  They subscribe to what they refer to as "the 3L philosophy" which stands for Life Long Learners.  They have trained in seminars and professional teacher training with the likes of UFC Champion Dan "The Beast" Severn, UFC Champ Lyoto Machita, Matt Hughes and many others.

A Martial Arts Tradition of Excellence
This is a traditional school in the virtues and system they preserve, however, they are not bound by it.  USA Martial Arts Phoenix integrative martial arts curriculum is probably best described as traditional mixed martial arts for self defense.  With elements from Taekwondo (Tang Soo Do), Hapkido, Jiu-jitsu, Krav Maga, Karate and Kung Fu, students have lots of opportunity for education and personal growth. The students earn authentic traditional rank in addition to the very best practical MMA skills in a positive environment.  The school regularly brings in Grandmasters, Champions and specialists to expose students to more disciplines as well as allow them to specialize, a unique concept in classical martial arts.

USA Martial Arts Mission - Enrichment for Children and Adults
USA Martial Arts Phoenix works in cooperation with local schools, home school groups and community churches providing a nurturing environment of encouraging martial arts instruction to children in order to instill good citizenship and noble virtue in their lives. Academics, self discinpline, and citizenship are emphasized and the highest rank in the school is "the parent belt". But it's not all serious. The instructors make it really fun by using skill drills, games and positive reinforcement for demonstrating martial arts virtues such as courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and indomitable spirit.

Winner Best of Phoenix
They must be doing something right because the awards and accolades continue to come in.  Not only are they popular with Phoenix kids and parents but they also won Best of Phoenix from the NEW TIMES.  Students even get the opportunity to travel and train in Asia, including trips to Korea and the Shaolin Temple in China.

USA Martial Arts I Love Kickboxing Phoenix!
USA Martial Arts is also the official representative of IMPACT K3 Kickboxing Phoenix, Phoenix Hottest Kickboxing Workout. Phoenix Martial Arts School Specializes in Teaching Children & Building Confidence

Kids Love Martial Arts - Parents Love The Lessons
Karate Kids Taekwondo Children Kung Fu Fun

More than your typical corner Karate dojo, soccer or kids after school activity, a new program is catching on with Phoenix kids and their parents.

KIDS LOVE MARTIAL ARTS is a personal development children's enrichment program that uses martial arts as a tool for developing self esteem, self-discipline, focus and coordination.  However, what makes it really different is that the learning is fun!

"Nobody sits on a bench in our children's program.  Every kid is treated like a champion and future Black Belt.  Unlike other programs, they actually have to earn rank here but we equip kids with the tools they need to achieve and succeed.  They learn to love working hard and enjoying the benefits that come from good habits and a positive attitude." says owner John Nottingham

The Kids Love Martial Arts concept is unique in that it emphasizes universal benefits while offering high standards for martial arts instruction.  It's certainly not a commercialized belt factory or pay for a belt as you go program.  They still hold back students if not ready, do old fashioned push ups, break boards and even have rules strict rules for parents on the sidelines.

Children in our program learn about their potential and discover their gifts through hard work.  We do not agree with the lowering of standards in the name of self-esteem, nor do we advocate the Drill Sergeant approach.  Sure some parents don't like us, but we take it as a badge of honor.  We're not for everyone.  We're advocates for the kids, not for bad parenting.  It isn't just about making money to us, this is our mission.", said Nottingham, 6th Degree Master Instructor.

Nottingham and his Phoenix based martial arts school staff must be doing something right having produced numerous champions in martial arts as well as in life.   The program's success is based on Nottingham's experience as a former soldier and in teaching over 10,000 students with his staff.  "You learn a lot if you pay attention to results. Parents and teachers notice.", he says.

Parents can take advantage of a WEBSPECIAL and get a free uniform right now.

A Program Developed by Professional Protectors with research from Olweus, Dr. George Thompson "Verbal Judo", Dr. Terence Webster-Doyle, Israel (Izzy) C. Kalman, MS, Gavin de Becker, and professional bodyguards.

The Arizona Bullying Prevention Project provides evidence-based life skills training incorporating advanced threat assessment tools, evacuation techniques, physical intervention strategies, and tactical communication in an encouraging and entertaining format.

Bully-Proof Vest Program - The Only Bullying Prevention Program Developed by Protection Professionals.  http://bullyproofingarizona.blogspot.com/

Attention Arizona Parents:
Your child may be a target for bullying but they do not have to be a victim.  Unlike other programs promoting "anti-bully" themes in which children are labeled weak self pitying "victims", our program promotes individual responsibility, "hero culture", empowerment and learning skills that can help a child for life. Plus we teach it in a fun, memorable manner.  There is hope!

-  Our three pronged Bullying Intervention approach treats the targeted child of bullying, the bullying behavior as well as the social environment enabling bullying.

-  Our 5 step How to Turn a Bully into a Buddy process encourages strong social skills, confidence building and uses common sense before self defense. Unlike other programs, we'll actually show your child simple and effective "last resort" defensive techniques in case they are physically attacked.

-  Children enjoy the exciting martial arts format and learn that they can avoid a fight and still walk away with dignity like a Black Belt.

-  Children learn the 3 Shields Strategy and "Bullying Word Blocks" from Verbal Judo, using humor, fear management skills.

-  Other children learn the value of being a "Hallway Hero" and "Protector Pal"

-  This AZ Bullying Prevention Program avoids the political labeling and the failing mindset of "BAD BULLY", "HELPLESS VICTIM" and reveals the danger posed to children in having politically motivated "zero tolerance" policies that lack common sense. The research will shock you.

- Unlike other Bully programs, this one is first designed to protect children, rather than first protect the schools and administrators from legal liability (although it will do that too).

- Prevents blame shifting from children, parents, teachers and school administration by promoting responsibility, communication, mutual respect and common sense problem solving.

- Gives hurting people the help, compassion and resources they need to change it.

What is Bullying?

Dan Olweus, creator of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, provides us with this commonly accepted definition for bullying in his book, Bullying at School: What We Know and What We Can Do:

"A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself."

This definition includes three important components:

1. Bullying is aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions.

2. Bullying involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time.

3. Bullying involves an imbalance of power or strength.

Types of Bullying

Bullying can take on many forms. As part of the Olweus Bullying Questionnaire, students are asked if they have been bullied in any of these nine ways:

1. Verbal bullying including derogatory comments and bad names

2. Bullying through social exclusion or isolation

3. Physical bullying such as hitting, kicking, shoving, and spitting

4. Bullying through lies and false rumors

5. Having money or other things taken or damaged by students who bully

6. Being threatened or being forced to do things by students who bully

7. Racial bullying

8. Sexual bullying

9. Cyber bullying (via cell phone or Internet) Learn more

Why Students Bully

Information about bullying suggests that there are three interrelated reasons why students bully.

1. Students who bully have strong needs for power and (negative) dominance.

2. Students who bully find satisfaction in causing injury and suffering to other

students.

3. Students who bully are often rewarded in some way for their behavior with

material or psychological rewards.

Impact of Bullying

A single student who bullies can have a wide-ranging impact on the students they bully, students who observe bullying, and the overall climate of the school and community.

Students Who are Bullied - Students deserve to feel safe at school. But when they experience bullying, these types of effects can last long into their future:
  • Depression
  • Low self-esteem
  • Health problems
  • Poor grades
  • Suicidal thoughts

Students Who Bully Others - Students who intentionally bully others should be held accountable for their actions. Those who bully their peers are also more likely than those students who do not bully others to *:
  • Get into frequent fights
  • Steal and vandalize property
  • Drink alcohol and smoke
  • Report poor grades
  • Perceive a negative climate at school
  • Carry a weapon

* Not all students who bully others have obvious behavior problems or are engaged in rule-breaking activities, however. Some of them are highly skilled socially and good at ingratiating themselves with their teacher and other adults. This is true of some boys who bully but is perhaps even more common among bullying girls. For this reason it is often difficult for adults to discover or even imagine that these students engage in bullying behavior.

Observers of Bullying - Students who see bullying happen also may feel that they are in an unsafe environment. Effects may include feeling:
  • Fearful
  • Powerless to act
  • Guilty for not acting
  • Tempted to participate

Schools with Bullying Issues - When bullying continues and a school does not take action, the entire school climate can be affected in the following ways:
  • The school develops an environment of fear and disrespect
  • Students have difficulty learning
  • Students feel insecure
  • Students dislike school
  • Students perceive that teachers and staff have little control and don't care about them

Find out how the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program addresses the issues surrounding bullying and provides Benefits for Schools and Benefits for Other Institutions.

Bullying is a Serious Issue

Bullying may vary greatly between schools and school districts, but it is very prevalent:
Statistics show that 23 percent of students in grades 4-6 had been bullied "several times" or more; 20 percent had bullied others (1998 study of 6,500 students in rural South Carolina)
Statistics show that 17 percent of students in grades 6-10 reported having been bullied "sometimes" or more, with 8 percent being bullied once a week. 19 percent said they had been a bully to others "sometimes" or more. (2001 study of 15,000 U.S. students)

The Bullying Circle

Nearly one in five students in an average classroom is experiencing bullying in some way. The rest of the students, called bystanders, are also affected by the bullying.1

The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program describes students involved or witnessing a bullying situation as having roles in the Bullying Circle2:

1C. Salmivalli, K. Lagerspetz, K. Björkqvist, K. Osterman, and A. Kaukiainen, "Bullying as a Group Process: Participant Roles and Their Relations to Social Status within the Group," Aggressive Behavior 22 (1996): 1-15.

2Dan Olweus, "Peer Harassment: A Critical Analysis and Some Important Issues," in Peer Harassment in School, ed. J. Juvonen and S. Graham (New York: Guilford Publications, 2001): 3-20.

http://www.olweus.org/public/bullying.page

EVIDENCE OF EFFECTIVENESS
Research Basis for the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program
  • The first evaluation of the program took place in the early-to-mid 1980s and involved approximately 2,500 children in grades 4-7 from 42 elementary and junior high schools in Bergen, Norway (equivalent to grades 5-8 in the U.S.). Using a quasi-experimental (age-cohorts) design, Olweus (1991; Olweus, Limber, & Mihalic, 1999) found:
    • substantial reductions (50% or more for most comparisons by students’ age and grade) in self-reported bullying and bully victimization.
    • significant reductions in self-reported vandalism, fighting, theft, alcohol use, and truancy.
    • significant improvements in the social climate of the classroom (as reflected in students’ reports of increased satisfaction with school life and school work, improved order and discipline at school, and more positive social relationships)
    • a dosage-response relationship at the classroom level, such that those classrooms that implemented essential components of the program saw greater reductions in bully/victim problems.
  • The New Bergen Project Against Bullying took place between 1997 and 1998 and involved 3,200 students in grades 5-7 and 9 from 14 intervention and 16 comparison schools in Bergen, Norway. Olweus and colleagues (Olweus, 2004; Olweus et al., 1999) found:
    • Reductions in the implementation schools of bully/victim problems of 21%-38%.
    • No significant changes in comparison schools in reports of being bullied and a 35% increase in the level of bullying other students
  • The Oslo Project Against Bullying (which began in 1999) involved 2,300 students in grades 5-7 and 9. Within one year, among 5-7th graders, Olweus (Olweus, 2004) found:
    • Reductions in self-reports of bully victimization of 42% (33% for girls and 48% for boys)
    • Reductions in self-reported bullying others of 52% (64% for girls and 45% for boys)
  • The first systematic evaluation of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program in the United States (Limber et al., 2004) was conducted in the mid-1990s, involving 18 middle schools in South Carolina. After one year of implementation, researchers observed:
    • Large, significant decreases in boys’ and girls’ reports of bullying others
    • Large, significant decreases in boys’ reports of being bullied and in boys’ reports of social isolation.
  • An evaluation of the Olweus program in 12 elementary schools in the Philadelphia area (Black, 2003) revealed that among those schools that had implemented the program with at least moderate fidelity:
    • There were significant reductions in self-reported bullying and victimization
    • There were significant decreases in adults’ observations of bullying (in the cafeteria and on the playground)

Anti-Bullying Movement - Sensationalized Media Claims Motivated by Politics?

Bully on Bullying
Much is being written right now on the so called Anti-Bully movement, how to handle bullies, beat the bully, bully be gone, beware of bullies, and bully this-bully that. Since the tragic incidents at Columbine High School many attempts have been made to link specific tragedies with bullying. While I will not deny that bullying behavior may have been a contributing factor, the case for directly linking bullying to some of these acts violence is not adequately made from my perspective. This is a very specific claim of a causal relationship from bullying experience to these incidences. But is it true?

Quaere verum Bully Busters
There are millions of individuals who have been bullied and never committed suicide. There are millions of individuals targeted for bullying who never went on violent shooting sprees. Why? Are we to deny the other elements? Are we simply seeking the holy grail or silver bullet- a quick and easy fix? Are we seeking an emotional outlet by demonizing bullies and affixing blame to only "the bully"? Are we creating a rewarding victim culture? Making such specific argument comes with some serious responsibility. This whole "Stop The Bully Epidemic" and "Anti-Bully" ideology raises many questions for me.

Is Bullying Such a Mystery?
My research thus far has indicated that bullying behavior in an of itself is not the sole cause of these violent incidences. It is part of a larger matrix. To attribute a single factor as the primary cause may be dangerous and result in us to stop looking for context, and all the other contributing factors that lead up to the incident. It is not a mystery. In fact, my teacher Gavin de Becker (leading expert/author The Gift of Fear) teaches us that one of the greatest tools we have for learning to predict violence situations is to start by refusing to it call it a mystery. This puts us in a seat of responsibility and on a good track to learn and prevent such incidents in the future. A must read for parents and teachers isProtecting The Gift by Gavin de Becker. It will change your life.

How Seriously Do I Take Bullying?
My position does not mean that bullying is not a serious issue. That does not mean that I do not take bullying very seriously. That does not diminish the lives of those who have passed away with some element of bullying. Quite the opposite, I have devoted my life to teaching men, women and children to live safer, happier, healthier lives. I am devoting serious resources, time and energy from my personal life, security company and martial arts school to help others because we can make a difference.

So Called Anti-Bullying Programs
My point is that we must tread carefully here and make sure we do our due diligence. We need to make sure that this bullying movement does not turn into a modern day witch hunt. In my view, this latest bullying movement is the result of some very powerful and persuasive, well-intentioned non-experts. Just take a look and you will clearly see that most of the so called "anti-bullying" programs were developed by people who are not professional protectors. That is not to say that academics and individuals from other fields do not have something valuable to contribute. I'm just saying that the butcher shouldn't be teaching how to do a liver transplant just because he sees livers every day or feels strongly about it. I think liver transplants are better left to specialists who you guessed it... actually transplant livers.

Personal Security & Self Defense from Bullying
My courses were developed through the lens of a protector, a bodyguard, military and law enforcement trainer and a teacher who has helped thousands of children (and adults) successfully deal with bullying. I'm proud to say that most of those incidents were resolved peacefully. If they did get physical, the harm was minimized on both sides due to the techniques and tactics my team and I teach. Perhaps more importantly, we use this opportunity to teach much broader safety and personal protection skills for the dangerous situations children are more likely to encounter.

Has Bullying Become the Latest Scare Tactic? Remember Stranger Danger?
I respectfully disagree with the "Anti-bully" effort. Our research indicates that it is causing more harm than good in some cases. Does it really warrant Government (your tax dollars) funding and anti-bullying legislation? Is this a governmental responsibility?

"I was once asked why I don't participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I'll be there."- Mother Teresa - War - Peace

I've been posting blog articles about it and I cannot reconcile any effort that would vilify a child. Our approach is pro-children and pro-peace.

I've been posting blog articles about it and I cannot reconcile any effort that would vilify a child. Our approach is pro-children. We advocate a different manner of thinking - a somewhat holistic one. I advocate a bullying prevention program driven by facts, evidence and shared best practices.

Make the bullies go away" is like wishing all criminals magically disappeared to the land of gumdrops, unicorns and rainbows. No matter how one attempts to rationalize it, denial is never a good safety strategy.
Nothing Provides Peace of Mind Like Living Informed With Truth & The Confidence of Being Able To Defend Yourself. You Can Give The Gift of Confidence to Your Child.

Our bully prevention and education training is developed to give children, parents and teachers peace of mind. We also advocate two other programs if you cannot access ours.
